2011 Alumni Weekend - REGISTER NOW!

Alumni of Michigan Alpha,

You are invited to attend the second annual Sigma Phi Epsilon Michigan Alpha Alumni Dinner. The dinner will take place on Friday, September9th at Pizza House Bar & Grill (located at 618 Church Street, AnnArbor, MI 48104-3002). For reference, this is the Friday of theMichigan/Notre Dame football game the first night game in the history
of Michigan Stadium. Please join us to meet some of the current undergraduates, the Alumni board and reconnect with other Michigan Alpha alumni.

The undergraduates had another incredible year in 2010-2011. Highlights include:

  • Recruiting 41 new members, bringing the chapter to a total of 122 men, making Michigan Alpha the largest fraternity on campus.

  • Raising over $25,000 for the St. Baldrick's Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. This figured more than double last year's earnings. Ninety-one brothers shaved their heads in a show of solidarity for pediatric cancer patients.

  • Finishing the 2010-2011 academic year with the fourth highest GPA on campus (3.382) among thirty chapters.

  • Winning seven of eight IFC awards given at the Go Greek Awards. Former Undergraduate President Rick Stepanovic and active Alumni Board President Jerry Mangona also both won awards for their categories.

  • Hosting another Balanced Man Scholarship dinner with over 100 attendees; the 2010 keynote speaker was Lloyd Carr. The 2011 keynote speaker is John Falk, Head Equipment Manager of the Varsity Football program, whose tenure dates all the way back to the Bo Schembechler era

  • Winning the yearlong fraternity intramural sports championship, defending their 2009-2010 championship.

Dinner will take place on September 9th from 7:00-9:00 PM at Pizza House. A buffet dinner including salad, pizza, breadsticks, and soft drinks will be provided at a cost of $20 per person. We have a private room and a cash bar will be available. For those interested in continuing the evening in Ann Arbor after dinner, Pizza House is located in the heart of the bar and restaurant district on central campus.

If you are a golfer, we are also organizing a golf outing at the University of Michigan Course (The “M” Course) on Friday afternoon. We have secured a block of 8 tee times from 1:00 PM until 2:10, and will proceed to dinner after golf. The rate for greens fees is $55 (cart included).

Both golf and dinner reservations are limited by space constraints. Please register right away if you are planning to join us.

July 2011 Wolverine - Learning from Our Past

[Editor's note: at the time the Wolverine went to press, the editorial board mistakenly approved an unedited version of the newsletter to the publisher for print. Consequently, several errors were printed on the version sent to your mailbox, and our front page interview with former AVC President Doug Buczak '71 was inaccurate. An excerpt of the corrected version appears in the online version below, and the remainder of the corrected newsletter can be found by clicking the link that follows. The editors express their sincerest apologies to Brother Buczak for the mistake.]

Brothers and friends, I'm happy to present to you our most recent issue of the SigEp Wolverine. This special issue is our first experiment with a new, expanded format, with more articles, photos, and content. Many of you received it in the mail, but we are now publishing the issues online as well for quick reference and mass distribution. An online archive page will be built as well so that you can find them all at a glance. Special thanks to Alex Prosperi '10, as well as the many volunteers without whom we could not bring the Wolverine to publication.

Lastly, the year-long hype regarding Alumni Weekend 2011 is coming to reality. Later this week we will have instructions to pay and register online. Make sure to mark your calendar and join us for golf and dinner on Friday, September 9 before we take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Saturday night. See you there!

HFF,

Learning From Our Past: An Interview with Doug Buczak
“You don’t know where you should be going until you know where you’ve been.”

The SigEp Wolverine recently talked with SigEp Doug Buczak, a 1971 graduate of the University of Michigan. Mr. Buczak helped recolonize the undergraduate chapter in 1975 and served as AVC President from 1984-1993. He has recently dedicated his time back to the chapter to help with the new housing project...

Moms, Michigan Football, and More...

First, I'm proud to announce that Nathan Hamet '13 has secured our keynote speaker for the 2011 Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet; Jon Falk of the University of Michigan Athletic Department has agreed to share his experience and accumulated wisdom of working with the Michigan Varsity Football Team for over thirty years.

From The Pulice Report

He grew up in Ohio a Buckeye fan, but since 1974, Jon Falk has been a loyal Wolverine. Now in his 37th season as equipment manager for the Michigan football team, Falk has compiled his experiences handling the gear and acting as mentor to hundreds of players in the engaging If These Walls Could Talk: Michigan Football Stories from Inside the Big House (Triumph Books), written with Dan Ewald. The book is filled with colorful anecdotes centered on U-M greats such as the late Bo Schembechler, who hired Falk, beloved Maize and Blue stars like Rob Lytle, Anthony Carter, Charles Woodson, and Tom Brady–the latter of whom penned the foreword–tales of fierce gridiron battles against Woody Hayes and Ohio State, and more. Recently, Falk agreed to an interview inside his office at Schembechler Hall on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, where he recounted how he once rescued Bo from subzero temperatures, impressed upon Brady the importance of leadership, and briefly lent his apartment to a visiting U.S. president.

The Balanced Man Scholarship is our way of honoring incoming freshmen who have demonstrated qualities of scholarship, leadership, athletic excellence, and community service. The winners of the scholarship are not required to join the fraternity, and it is also a great way to show hundreds of incoming freshmen what being a SigEp at the University of Michigan is all about. We're glad to have Mr. Falk join us later this fall.

Talking about athletics, Did you know that the IM Championship we won this year was MI Alpha's 24th??! I didn't until I read the most recent MI Alpha Parent Newsletter. Thanks to Parent Rep, Martha Davis, for putting this together and shining the spotlight on our undergraduates and their many achievements for the year.

Check out the news, photos, and more by clicking here!

And don't forget:

Alumni Weekend is September 9-11, 2011
Parent Weekend is October 29, 2011

Lastly, if you know any graduating male seniors attending U-M this fall, I strongly suggest you nominate them for the Balanced Man Scholarship (BMS). E-mail Vinnie Caruso at vmcaruso@gmail.com with names and e-mail addresses. Our BMS Committee will get them an application and all the pertinent information.

It's a great time to be a SigEp at Michigan Alpha...for you alums out there, e-mail us at uofmsigep@gmail.com with updates on you, your family, your job, or anything else you'd like. Pictures always appreciated.

HFF,

Jerry Mangona

Congratulations to the MI Alpha on a Banner Year and ANOTHER IM CHAMPIONSHIP!

Brothers of Michigan Alpha,

I'm proud to announce that our undergraduate brothers just capped off another great year in Ann Arbor. Last night at the annual Greek Awards Ceremony, the chapter competed against all the other IFC chapters on campus and emerged victorious in the following categories:

Alumni Programming
Membership Development
New Member Education
Chapter Administration
Greek Life/Campus Involvement
Philanthropy
Recruitment

Special commendations go to Richard Stepanovic (rick.stepanovic@gmail.com) who was named IFC President of the Year, and the Chapter Advisor of the Year award, going to Jerry Mangona (jerry@jerrymangona.com).

The chapter now boasts having raised over $24,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, doubling the numbers from last year. The annual head-shaving event is now one of the premier philanthropic events on campus and is growing every year, and our boys are featured in a television interview right here.

In recruiting news, the annual Balanced Man Scholarship has grown by leaps and bounds, featuring keynote speakers such as Coach John Beilein (Men's Varsity Basketball) and Coach Lloyd Carr (formerly of Men's Varsity Football). Honoring incoming freshmen with interest in scholarship, leadership, athletics, and philanthropy has served as both a way to re-center our undergraduates around our core values while attracting high quality recruits in to the chapter.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any organization, and finding men of achievement, character, and leadership potential is the key to our continued "Tradition of Excellence" which has made MI Alpha so great through the years. If you have any friends who are planning on attending (or hoping to attend, depending on their enrollment status) the University of Michigan in the fall, please nominate them for the scholarship by e-mailing us at uofmsigep@gmail.com with their names and contact information.

Lastly, MI Alpha has been named IFC Intramural Athletic Champions once again! Coming from a 600-point deficit in December, the chapter channeled all their efforts and turned up the heat going into the home stretch. The athletic dynasty continues....

A few last words...

Our chapter president, Austin Davis, along with the officers of our undergraduate executive board deserve the credit for continuing to make Michigan Alpha a great chapter. They love hearing from and meeting the storied alumni from the MI Alpha family. If you can find a moment, I really encourage you to send them your congratulations, well-wishes, and many stories of your undergraduate shenanigans by e-mailng them at sigep.eboard@umich.edu.

Finally, plans are underway for a bigger, better 2011 Alumni Weekend. The alumni weekend is scheduled to coincide with the Michigan vs. Notre Dame weekend, the first night game at the Big House. Alumni Weekend: September 9 and 10, 2011. Save the date!

Thanks to all of our alumni for their continued support and to our undergraduates for keeping the tradition alive. Our annual campaign letter and issue of the SigEp Wolverine are going into production soon; we look forward to hearing from you.

HFF,

Jerry Mangona
