Michigan Alpha Housing in the News

Earlier this week, petitions were filed with the City of Ann Arbor to change the use of our target property from commercial to residential. The zoning code for the target property is appropriate for our housing project, however, any use change needs to go before the city zoning commission. The process will take several months, but given the make up of the surrounding area, we have no reason to believe that the city or our potential neighbors will have any objection to the project.

The editor of the Ann Arbor Chronicle featured the project on their front page. An excerpt is below, and the full article can be found here. as the interview commentary was aimed specifically at the city government and local residences, it should be noted that I emphasized certain parts of the project over others. In addition to the study and lecture area, ample space will be dedicated for undergraduate social programming, boardrooms, trophy rooms, and other multi-use space.

An undergraduate advisory committee is being formed to give input on the floor plan, and an alumni focus group will be formed prior to kicking off the fundraising campaign.

If you are interested in getting involved with the fundraising campaign or the alumni and volunteer corporation (AVC), please contact me at uofmsigep@gmail.com

Lastly, if you haven't already donated to the Annual Campaign, click here to make an online donation and support the culture of excellence that is Michigan Alpha at the University of Michigan. In this critical time of transition, your donations have an enormous impact on our success. Thank you for your continued support of Michigan Alpha.

The building at 730 Tappan – at the intersection of Tappan and Hill, across the street from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business – is home to the Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The church is planning to sell the property to the Michigan Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. On Monday, the fraternity filed for a special exception use with the city – if granted, it would allow the building to be converted into a residence for the fraternity. The chapter is currently located nearby at 704 Hill St., on the southeast corner of Hill and State.

Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 730 Tappan in Ann Arbor, on the northwest corner of Hill and Tappan.
The application to the city for a special exception use states that no significant changes are planned for the building’s exterior. The site includes 19 parking spaces – the plan calls for adding 11 bike spaces in the basement of the building as well as 11 bike spaces outside. The interior of the three-level building would be remodeled into a residence with a maximum of 44 beds. (The chapter has over 100 members, but more than half live off-site.) The property is currently zoned R2B, a zoning category that allows for fraternities. The neighborhood includes many fraternities, sororities and student rental properties.

Jerry Mangona, president of the chapter’s alumni association, told The Chronicle they’ve been trying to find an appropriate site for the past five years – the current location was never intended to be permanent, he said.

Happy Birthday, SigEp!

Today our fraternity turns the ripe-old age of 109 years old, and now is as good a time as any to bring you all up to speed on some of the many great things going on at Michigan Alpha.

For those of you who weren't in town on the weekend of Michigan vs. Michigan State, you missed out on our first annual Michigan Alpha Alumni Weekend. Over 75 Michigan Alphas were in town celebrating at our Friday night dinner, with alumni representing all the way from the 1950's through the 2000's. Special thanks to the classes of 2005-2010 -- who showed up with over 20 attendees -- as well as to Rich Nemesi '08 and Dave Murray '07 for planning the dinner and golf outing. Look out for pictures to be posted soon.

The Alumni & Volunteer Corporation (AVC) is growing alumni programming at rapid pace, and we look to build on this year's successes going forward. Mark your calendars for the weekend of September 10-12, 2011, which is our tentative date for Alumni Weekend next year. This will be Michigan Alpha's 100-year anniversary, as well as the first night game at the Big House when the Wolverines take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. If we can get organized early enough, we'd like to get hotel and ticket packages for our loyal MI Alpha alums.

We need volunteers to help pull this off; so if you're interested in supporting MI Alpha with your time and talent, please e-mail us at uofmsigep@gmail.com, and we'll be in touch with you. We're especially looking for liaisons representing the (re)-Founding Father era of '99-04, reps from the early '90s, the '80s, '70s, and '60s to help promote and get the word out. Step up and remind us all why SigEp is the dominant fraternity on Michigan's campus.

In other news, the AVC has been in meetings with construction management companies, architects, the City of Ann Arbor, and SigEp National Housing to discuss further due diligence on the purchase of a permanent home for Michigan Alpha. We are slowly moving forward but are considering some of the obstacles presenting themselves as we determine the feasibility of the project. More details to come as the project(s) get put into motion.

Also, a thank you to some of our new volunteers who have decided to return home to MI Alpha and support the AVC as we continue to grow our operations. Matt Hoffman '00 is now serving as our Chapter Counselor, working with the undergraduate chapter in continuing the culture of success and improving operations with the chapter. Matt was one of the re-founding fathers from my era, and we're happy to have him back on board.

Lastly, we'd like to welcome Doug Buczak '71 back to the AVC as well. Doug served in various capacities on the board -- including holding the office of AVC President -- for 18 years. His historic knowledge of MI Alpha, as well as his wisdom and expertise in fraternity operations, is invaluable to the chapter at this critical moment as we take the chapter and alumni board to new levels of success. Doug, we missed you, and we're glad to have you back.

Several others of you have expressed interest in getting involved, and I will be personally contacting you soon. Others have expressed interest in donating to our annual campaign; we will be taking donations through an online portal very soon as well. We appreciate your patience as we continue to expand the footprint of MI Alpha going forward.

Happy Birthday, SigEp...here's to the next 109 years.

HFF,
Jerry Mangona
President, Michigan Alpha Alumni Association

p.s. If you're back in town for a football Saturday, feel free to stop by the chapter house on the SE Corner of Hill & State St. Meet some of the undergraduates, and say hello to fellow alums. You're welcome home anytime.

Fall Alumni Weekend 2010

***GOLF NOW SOLD OUT...STILL ROOM FOR DINNER. Sign up below***

[editor's note: this is the Michigan Alpha Alumni Association's first and feeble attempt at having an online presence for the benefit of Michigan Alpha alums, undergraduates, and parents. In other words, there's someone out there who knows what they're doing far more than me. If you have the expertise and want to volunteer to be our online/social marketing guru, send me an e-mail. Thanks - Jerry (jerry@jerrymangona.com)]

Alumni of Michigan Alpha,

You are invited to attend the inaugural Sigma Phi Epsilon Michigan Alpha Alumni Dinner. The dinner will take place on Friday, October 8th at Pizza House Bar & Grill (located at 618 Church Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104-3002). For reference, this is the Friday of the Michigan/Michigan State football game. Please join us to meet some of the current undergraduates, the Alumni board and reconnect with other Michigan Alpha alumni.

The undergraduates enjoyed a great year in 2009-2010, giving us much to celebrate. Highlights include:

- Receiving the Buchanan Cup in 2009, given by SigEp headquartes to recognize outstanding chapters nationwide. This is the first Buchanan Cup for Michigan Alpha ever.
- Winning the Fraternity of Year at the University of Michigan; this is the 4th time SigEp has won this award in the last eight years.
- Recruiting forty-five new members in the last academic year, bringing the chapter to 109 total members.
- Securing a new on-campus housing at 704 Hill St. (corner of State and Hill) for 2009-2010 and beyond.
- Hosting a Balanced Man dinner with fourteen finalist and over 100 attendees. Keynote speaker in 2009 was Men’s Basketball Coach John Beilein; former head football coach Lloyd Carr has committed to be the speaker for 2010.
- Winning the yearlong fraternity intramural sports championship and Greek Week for 2009-2010.

Dinner will take place on October 8th from 7:30-9:30 PM. A buffet dinner including salad, pizza, breadsticks, and soft drinks will be provided at a cost of $20 per person. We have the private room overlooking Church and a cash bar will be available. For those interested in continuing the evening in Ann Arbor after dinner, Pizza House is located in the heart of the bar and restaurant district on central campus.

If you are a golfer, we are also organizing a golf outing at the University of Michigan Course (The “M” Course) on Friday afternoon. We have secured a block of tee times beginning at 2:00 PM, and will proceed to dinner after golf. We have a negotiated rate for greens fees of $33, cart included (this is less than the student rate).

Summary:
Golf: 2:00-7:00 PM, M Course, Cost- $33
